English Definition: Distraction—derived from attachment, anger and ignorance—means dispersion of the mind and its wandering based on the conditions, leading to the inability to remain focused on a wholesome object. There is natural distraction through the five sense consciousnesses; external distraction due to five sense pleasures; internal distraction due mental sinking, agitation, and delight; distraction concerning the aim due to the hope for praise; and distraction of unruliness due to attachment to the sense of I and mine. Asanga classifies it within the 20 secondary afflictions.
