Tibetan: བསམ་གཏན་གསུམ་པ་
Tibetan (Wylie): bsam gtan gsum pa
Tibetan (phonetics): sam ten sum pa
English term: Third Dhyāna
Alternative: Third meditative absorption
English Definition: The third meditative absorption within the Form Realm. The base is either a. taking rebirth within the seventh, eighth, or ninth abodes of the Form Realm or b. a lower abiding being possessing a physical support and entering into the meditative absorption of the third dhyana. It is characterized by five branches: equanimity, recollection, introspection, happiness, and one-pointedness. Attaining it creates an unmovable karma that results in rebirth in the third stage of heavens within the form realm in the very next life, which is associated with this meditative absorption.
