English Definition: Contact differentiates the occurrence of an object upon the coming together of the object, the sense faculty and the consciousness, from the meeting of any of the six sense bases with their respective objects. It afflicts beings because it determines the object based on the coming together of object, sense faculty, and consciousness. Contact is the coming together of the the object, the sense factulty and consciousness. It is the basis for sensation. When explained in the context of the 46 or 51 mental factors, it is classified as one of the five omnipresent factors in Asanga’s classification and as one of the ten general mind bases in Vasubandhu’s classification.
