English Definition: This list of 4 is literally called in Tibetan “abandonments.” Even though it includes 4 different kinds of effort or excertions, the list is named after the first of the four. The four are: (1) exerting oneself in abandoning existing negative mind states, (2) exerting oneself in abandoning the arising of such states, (3) exerting onself in giving rise to virtuous mind states that are not yet arisen, and (4) exerting oneself in making those virtuous states continue.
