English Definition: One of the four Indian philosophical schools, within which it is one of the two schools of the Great Vehicle. It receives its names from their assertion about the world being only mind and their emphasis on spiritual practice. The main sources ofr their assertions are “The Ornament of Mahāyana Sūtras”, “Distinguishing the Middle from the Extremes”, and “Distinguishing between Phenomena and Nature”, all by Maitreya and Asanga, as well as the latter’s “Compendium of Abhidharma”. Among their main assertions are: the absolute existence of non-dual consciousness of luminous self-awareness; the three natures of reality (imputed, other-dependent and thoroughly established); buddha-nature and the five families (sravaka, pratyeka, mahāyana, uncertain and severed families). The main subdivision within this schools is between True Aspectarians and False Aspectarians.
