English definition: The Sanskrit term means “outflow” or “flux”, and the term refers to the mental contaminations that bind one to cyclic existence and are permanently destroyed when attaining the status of an arhat. They are 1) the contaminant of desire, 2) the contaminant of becoming, and 3) contaminant of ignorance. To this list is usually added 4) contaminant of view. This term is a synonym of “afflictions” (ཉོན་མོངས་, kleśa), since they contaminate the objects that serve as objects of affliction are contaminated.
