English Definition: Faith is trust with regard to reliable, true objects (i.e. confidence in the truth of the law of karma, the existence of Buddha, Dharma and Sangha, etc.), admiration with regard to wholesome qualities (i.e. a purity of mind that appreciates goodness and thus uplifts the spirit) and aspiration with regard to one’s own capability (i.e. longing to attain the qualities one admires). Faith functions as the basis for determination. It is categorized as one of the ten virtuous mind bases in Vasubandhu’s classification and in one of the eleven virtuous mental factors in Asanga’s classification.
